HIS EXCELLENCY SHEIKH NAHAYAN MABARAK AL NAHAYAN

Cabinet Member and Minister of Tolerance

His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan is the Minister of Tolerance in the new Cabinet announced in October 2017. His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak joined the Federal Government in 1992 and held a number of government portfolios including Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and held the position of Minister of Education, and Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development.

His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak was also Chancellor of United Arab Emirates University from 1983 to 2013; Chancellor of Higher Colleges of Technology from 1988 to 2013; and President of Zayed University from 1998 to 2013.

His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan received his education from the British Millfield School until the high secondary level before joining Magdalen College at Oxford University-UK.

Call for Papers

The 2nd American University in the Emirates International Research Conference (AUEIRC’18) will provide a platform for academics, practitioners, and policy makers from around the globe to engage in a dialogue on some of the most pressing issues in the drive towards sustainability, and social responsibility.

AUEIRC’18 will highlight the various aspects of sustainable innovations, human security and creative business that can scale for the benefit of communities. The scope of the conference includes a broad range of topics on areas that impact contemporary society.

Conference Publications

Accepted papers will be published by Springer in edited volumes following their specific fields as printed volumes as well as online in the digital library SpringerLink. Authors of selected best papers will be invited to submit the extended version of their AUEIRC papers for peer review and will be published in a special issue of the AUE journal “Smart City Challenges and Solutions”.

Throughout her distinguished career, she was engaged in a series of academic administrative positions at various institutions and have been engaged in providing strategic directives at a senior leadership role. Professor Nabeel Arif Jurdi is the professor, at the American University in the Emirates, where he has been since 2007. He currently serves as Professor Emeritus at South Asian Strategic Stability Institute (SASSI) University. In 2014, he was an Evaluator for Dubai government excellence program. He received a B.Sc. in Social Science and Economics from California State Polytechnic University in 1970, and an M.A. from University of Southern California in 1972. He received his Ph.D. in Government from Claremont Graduate University in 1977. From 1988 to 1993, he worked at Skagit Valley College, Mount Vernon, Washington as a Professor. From 2003 to 2004 he worked at Abu Dhabi University, as a Consultant. From 1999 to 2003 he worked at University of Qatar, as Professor and Chairman, Department of Mass Communication. From 1993 to 1999 he worked at Kuwait University as a Professor in the Department of Mass Communication. From 1980 to 1987 he worked at University of the United Arab Emirates as an Associate Professor and Chairman of Department of Mass Communication. From 1977 to 1980 he worked at King Saud University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mass Communication. From 1973 to 1975 he worked at Durham University as a Lecturer in the Centre for Middle East and Islamic Studies.

She is the author of three monographs and numerous articles on security issues in Central Asia, the U.S. foreign policy, international organizations, democracy issues in IR, and international engagement more broadly. Dr. Tarek currently is a Dean of the College of Law at the American University in the Emirates. He also served as Director of the Institute of Finance and Tax Sciences at the Faculty of Law, Helwan University. He published papers in many scientific conferences. He also published many books in the Arab finance funds, Economic Analysis of Corruption Banking, and obeyed the legal and economic aspects of the banking sector.

Professor Adel Khelifi holds a PhD in Software Engineering from the École de Technologie Supérieure of the Université du Québec, Montréal, Canada (2005). He is a Dean and Associate Professor at the College of Computer and Information Technology of the American University in the Emirates. He was working for the United Nations MSF in Canada, for Canadian Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, and for the Ministry of Finance in Tunisia. Currently, he is involved in developing a software engineering curriculum. As a Canadian ISO member in software engineering, Professor Khelifi is contributing to the development of software measurement standards.

His research interests are in the areas of information theory and coding, speech and image recognition, reliable software, microcontrollers and embedded systems. He is a member of IEEE, IEEE computer society, IAENG, IRED, ASR, and a senior member of IACSIT.

Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the University of Tehran, Iran. He had studied debris flow experimentally and numerically and proposed equations for sediment transport and hydraulic roughness of high-concentrated flow. He has focused on three major research topics: experimental and numerical research on debris flood control measure, innovative models for flood and reservoir inflow/streamflow forecasting and strategic planning of water resources. He has published about 80 papers in scientific and 150 papers in journal conferences mainly in river engineering and water resources management, strategic planning and sustainable development.

His scientific research focus is on strategies that blend field and laboratory methods with new theory, modeling, computation, data systems, and evaluative techniques to create solutions to complex environmental challenges associated with desalination programs in Qatar.

Dr. Aladin Šemović is a lawyer in Novi Pazar, Serbia and an Assistant Professor of Law at the International University of Novi Pazar. Dr. Šemović received his Ph.D. in Criminal Law from the International University of Novi Pazar. His thesis was on Modern Technology and Contemporary Crime in Serbian Law.
Dr. Šemović has authored and co-authored many papers in the sphere of criminal law, including on the subjects of modern technology use in criminal court proceedings, tax evasion and the prosecution of foreign fighters. Dr. Šemović has also presented his papers at several conferences throughout Serbia, and at the University of Maribor in Slovenia and Istanbul University in Turkey. Prior to working as a lawyer, Dr. Šemović served in the courts for 14 years, including eight years as a judge, more than half of which were in the Higher Court in Novi Pazar.

Dr. Marc Lavergne has a Ph.D. in Political Geography, and a B.A in Modern Arabic, and as a graduate from the Institute of Political Sciences in Paris, Marc Lavergne is a specialist in economic and social development, and in crises and conflicts in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa. He has directed several French research institutes located in the Middle East (CEDUST in Khartoum, CERMOC in Beirut and Amman, CEDEJ in Cairo). He presently serves at the Arab and Mediterranean World's stiudies at the University of Tours.He has been a Board Member with prominent Humanitarian NGO's such as Médecins sans Frontières, Action against Hunger and Amel-International. He has taken part in several international assignments for conflict resolution (e.g. as Political and Legal Adviser to the Joint Military Commission in the Nuba Mountains in Sudan, and as humanitarian expert and coordinator of the expert group of the UN Security Council on Darfur).

Dr. Abdelhadi Halawa received both his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from American Universities. Since 1997, he has been working as an Associate Professor at Millersville University, Millersville, PA, USA. He also has been serving as the Wellness Program Coordinator in his department. Since 2006 and 2008, Dr. Halawa has been contributing his expertise in research to peer-review numerous research grant proposals for the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) of Bibliotheca Alexandria (BA), Alexandria, Egypt, the National Priorities Research Program (NPRP), and the Undergraduate Research Experience Program (UREP) of the State of Qatar’s National Research Fund (QNRF), respectively. Dr. Halawa maintains a robust scholarship agenda. He has published and presented numerous scholarly works at the regional, national, and international levels; including a textbook in Arabic and peer-reviewed papers published in scholarly international journals. His principal research interests lie in the field of health education, wellness proposition, and public health issues.

Berislav Žmuk, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Statistics, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb where he teaches the following subjects: Statistics, Business statistics and Business forecasting. In 2013, he successfully completed Sampling Program for Survey Statisticians at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. In 2015, he completed Introduction to Web Surveys, Introduction to Questionnaire Design and Mixed-Mode and Mixed-Device Surveys at Gesis - Leibniz Institute for Social Research in Cologne, Germany. In 2016, he completed Introduction to Survey Data Analysis and Advanced Survey Data Analysis and Survey Experiments at Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis in Colchester, United Kingdom. In 2017, he completed Survey Research: Statistical Analysis and Estimation course at Utrecht Summer School in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Dr. Rebman is a Professor of Information Systems at the University of San Diego and teaches courses in management information systems, systems analysis/design and programming, website design, programming and management, data communication and network security, project management, database management, marketing and business intelligence/data analytics.
Dr. Rebman has published more than 78 research papers in the areas of speech recognition, human-computer interaction, electronic meeting support systems, decision support systems, neural networks, information/computing technologies (ICT), technostress, security, and distance learning/online education.
Dr. Rebman was recently appointed as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Computer Information Systems. Rebman also serves on the editorial boards of International Journal of Information Systems and Supply Chain Management, International Journal of Innovation and Learning, and is a reviewer for several other journals such as Communications of the ACM, European Journal of Information Systems.
For over 20 years, Dr. Rebman has been a member of Southwest Decision Sciences Institute (SWDSI), Decision Sciences Institute (DSI) and Association of Information Systems (AIS), and the International Association of Computer Information Systems (IACIS). Dr. Rebman has held leadership roles in Southwest Decision Sciences Institute serving as Track Chair, Proceedings Publication Coordinator, Webmaster, Secretary, Program Chair, and President. Adil Hassan has started his career in research in The National Research Centre in Sudan. While pursuing his career in research, he has contributed in teaching and academic management in different Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Sudan. He has conducted many research grants and consultancies in both Sudan and Oman. Currently he is offering his professional support as an external reviewer for the Ministry of Higher Education in Oman and as a grant committee member for the TRC and reviewer for its national research award and FURAP award. He published many papers in international journals of entrepreneurship, book chapters and e-books for his credits. He is also extending his support as external examiner for MBA, PhD and DPA dissertations for local and international universities and colleges. Dr. Munir Majdalawieh is the head of the information systems and technology management department at the College of Technological Innovation and the Provost Advisor on continuing Educational and Outreach, Zayed University, Dubai, UAE. Prior to joining ZU in 2012, he worked for the American University of Sharjah (AUS) in UAE for six years and worked for Booz Allen Hamilton, Hewlett Packard, Compaq Computer Corporation, and Digital Equipment Corporation in the USA for more than 22 years. He has published many peer-reviewed papers in international journals and conference proceedings covering topics like enterprise business processes, internal auditing, and control, IT security and privacy, MIS, risk management, green logistics and SCM, corporate and IT governance and strategic changes in IT/IS technologies and management. Dr. Majdalawieh obtained his Ph.D. in IT and his EMBA from George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia and his MSc. in Computer Science and Applied Math from Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Talal is a lawyer in different Iraqi courts, legal consultant and agent for different private and governmental institutions, and a lecturer of continuous teaching in many scientific and social institutions since 1991 up to now. He participated in more than 10 local, regional and international conferences and symposiums concerning different legal events and affairs.
As for his experience, he had many occupations such as acting dean of the College of Law, head of public law department, vice dean and others, in addition to working in several colleges and universities.

The teaching expertise of Dr. Saleh covers areas of teaching public international law in the English language, International organizations in the English language, international commercial contracts in the English language, and legal studies in the English language. Dr. Saleh has participated in a number of international conferences on public international law, notably The Annual Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law Conference, and Macquarie Annual Conference on International Law. His research interests revolve around public international law and international trade law issues, and he has a book that was distributed globally, which deals with the participation of developing countries in the dispute settlement system of the WTO, in addition to Articles dealing with the initiation of international trade disputes, and the defects of the litigation process of the WTO, which were presented at the above-mentioned conferences. Dr. Saleh worked as a legal consultant for one of the leading Australian food retail companies in addition to his role as a part-time lecturer at Macquarie University. His professional career continued in Jordan, where he worked as a legal consultant for one of the distinguished law firms in Amman until he moved to The American University in the Emirates, where he took over the position of the dean of the college of law. Prof. Toufic Mezher

Khalifa University of Science and Technology, UAE

Toufic Mezher is a Professor of Engineering Systems and Management at Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KUST) since 2017. Before Joining KUST, he was a Professor of Engineering Systems and Management at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (2008-2016) and Professor of Engineering Management at the American University in Beirut from 1992 to 2007.  He earned a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida, and a Master and ScD in Engineering Management from George Washington University in 1988 and 1992 respectively.  Energy Strategy and Policy; Technology Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Innovation; Sustainable Development; and Knowledge Management; and Sustainable Construction.

Dr. Yousef Al-Assaf

President of Rochester Institute of Technology - Dubai

Dr. Al-Assaf had his PhD from Oxford University and leadership training from Cornell University. He is a widely published and academic and senior education management professional with extensive international experience.

He is currently President of Rochester Institute of Technology- Dubai, a leading not for profit international branch of RIT Rochester, New York. RIT Dubai University is established in conjunction with the Dubai Government in Dubai Silicon Oasis. Prior to this he was Dean of the College of Engineering at the American University of Sharjah where he was one of the founding members of the electrical engineering and computer engineering programs.   
During his tenure at RIT Dubai, he has ensured that the university plays a major role in the ecosystem of Dubai Silicon Oasis and supporting the achievements of Dubai vision. Introduced a number of new programs, certifications and initiatives to meet the needs of public and technology partners including: Smart City Sciences, Data Analytics, Emerging Technologies, Corporate and Customer Happiness, Future Shaping, Computing Security and Sustainability among others.   

Dr. Al-Assaf's research focuses on using soft computing to model and control various industrial, business and medical systems. Applications include materials modeling and classification, prostheses control, industrial quality control and optimization.  His industrial experience is in the areas of adaptive and predictive control, soft computing and industrial instrumentation and control.
